Stomach After Child Birth
“What To Do To Get Your Stomach Back After Childbirth?”
Are you worried about your stomach after child birth? I remember clearly, it was a day or two after my son was born, when I looked at my stomach and thought, “What has happened? Why is my stomach still huge?”
I may be in a category all my own because my 5′ 3″ frame had carried a baby that weighed in, at birth, at a whopping 10 pounds 13 ounces. I was fighting an uphill
battle before I even put on my shoes.
I kept looking at my stomach, waiting for it to disappear. It just wouldn’t go away. No matter how much I wished it away, it remained. I knew I had to do something to start the process, so I asked my doctor what to do.
She was great. She reminded me that my baby had weighed almost 11 pounds and that I’d had a cesarean section that would be more difficult to regain my stomach.
As I was leaving the hospital 4 days after my son was born, one of the doctors who was discharging me said, without thinking, “Now remember, you’ve had a c-section, you should not pick up anything that weighs more than 6 or 7 pounds.” I’m sure I laughed. I remember saying, “But doctor, the baby weighs more than 10 pounds.” He was embarrassed and said to not pick up anything weighing more than the baby, then!
I was desperate to see my feet again. That may sound silly, but it had been many months since I’d looked down and was able to glimpse my feet. I wanted my stomach to come back to its original spot, and flat but I had a long road ahead of me before that would happen.
I would not do anything differently but I will say that I wasn’t really thinking about the effects it would have on my stomach when, my son was 6 months old I got pregnant with his sister.
My preemie of 3 weeks came into the world at 9 pounds! She was huge! I ended up with a second c-section (within 16 months) and will admit that it was not easy to get my stomach to where I was comfortable for quite some time.
I was fortunate to hook up with a few other new moms and we worked together and encouraged one another to eat right and exercise. The toughest part was the exercise, for me, but it paid off.
